Ayurveda

Ayurveda, is a complete medical system, dates back 5000years, originated in India, literally means “Science of life” (Ayur – Life & Veda – Science). Currently Ayurvedic medicine is considered as one of the Alternative Medicine. Ayurveda mainly uses the plant based medicines and an array of treatment modalities. Majority of medicinal formulations are based in two ancient texts - Charaka Samhita & Sushruta Samhita. Ayurveda has 8 branches namely - 1.Internal Medicine, 2.Surgery, 3.Treatment of head and neck disease, 4. Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics, 5.Toxicology, 6.Psychiatry, 7.Care of the elderly and rejuvenation and 8.Sexual Vitality. It can be better explained in two aspects - Philosophy and Practice.

Philosophy of Ayurveda is mainly based on Macrocosm – Microcosm interconnectivity, all elements found in Universe are found in atoms and the elements are Space, Air, Water, Fire and Earth. The human beings are also made up of these five elements, when it is balanced inside and outside of the body, then it is in perfect health. Accordingly the human body constitutes these elements in a 3 different basic combination, (though it can be 12) namely Vata ( Air + Space), Pitta ( Fire + Water) and Kapha ( Earth + Water). These attribute is presented in the body in two aspects  - One is inborn nature (Prakriti) which determines the characteristics of an individual and another one is acquired nature (Doshas) through the lifestyle, diet pattern, environment and Social intervention. Doshas are responsible for the diseases if it is unbalanced.

Practice of Ayurveda starts with a comprehensive consultation and pulse diagnosis to find out the imbalance of Dosha and the disease pattern. The typical Ayurvedic treatment has three line of treatments: Poorva Karma (Preparatory Procedure), Pradhan Karma, commonly known as Pancha Karma (Main Procedure – Fivefold purification treatments) and Paschat Karma ( Post treatment therapies). Poorva Karma involves Oelation(Snehana) and Fomentation (Swedana). Pradhan Karma therapies are Vamana, Virechana, Vasti, Nasya and Raktamokshana. Paschat Karma  is follow up with Medication, Lifestyle and Diet (Pathya).
